Copper Marans

We added Marans to our laying flock in 2017. They were one of the first breeds I wanted to raise to help achieve my rainbow egg basket! I also wanted to create my own olive eggers. Using the dark brown egg genetics from Marans is one way to achieve beautiful olive eggs. Those dark egg genes combined with the blue egg genes of my Ameraucanas make a perfect match. I ended up falling in love with the breed, their uniquely colored eggs, and their dual-purpose build. For these reasons, I decided to also work on my own line of Marans and to strive towards producing Standard-bred Black Coppers and a non-Standard project variety, Blue Copper.

Breeding Coppers is definitely not for the faint of heart and I have been both frustrated and excited about my birds. I am dedicated to developing a great strain over time. One thing about the Marans breed is that it is really difficult to get consistent results. I have been taking notes on the genetics of my flock and learning how their traits inherit. I am breeding primarily to fill our family freezer, have gorgeous egg color, and for the enjoyment that I’ve found in exhibiting my own stock and seeing my progress in action.

My egg color varies between shades 4-7 and although I’m breeding towards the SOP, I still intentionally try to maintain and improve upon my egg color. My eggs may not be as dark as some, but I am working hard on my well-rounded breeding goals.

2024 Marans Pricing & Availability

I do not sell chicks or hatching eggs from my Marans at this time.

I may have started birds available locally from these flocks a few times a year. This will depend on a lot of variables and quality will vary. Some will be pet/layer quality with flaws that make them unsuitable for breeding to the SOP. A small number may be breeder/show quality birds that I just don’t have room for and would like to pass on to another serious breeder or a youth interested in breeding and/or exhibition. Started bird prices range from $30 each depending on age, sex, quality.

No waiting lists will be kept for started birds. They will be posted as they are available and will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

I’ve made a regional PNW Marans Breeders & Enthusiasts Facebook group to help promote the breed and provide a place to connect with other fanciers. Feel free to check it out!
